From Family-Owned to Industry Trusted

Keep the Account. We Handle the Marine.

Retail P&C brokers often face a challenge: a strong client relationship with limited in-house marine capability. Lightship Maritime Inc. serves as a marine insurance broker and wholesale marine insurance partner so you can retain the overall account while outsourcing only the maritime portion.

Your client remains yours. We focus exclusively on commercial marine insurance placements and ongoing service support.

Retail P&C Brokers

If you need marine insurance broker support for commercial fishing vessels, tug and barge operations, shipyard programs, terminals, or cargo exposures, we provide specialist placement.

Licensed Referral Brokers

If you prefer not to handle marine submissions directly, our marine referral program allows you to introduce the account and receive recurring commission, without building a marine underwriting department.

Marine Risks and Classes We Handle

Lightship Maritime Inc. places coverage for:

  • Commercial fishing vessels
  • Tugs and barges
  • Freight and cargo operations
  • Marinas and waterfront facilities
  • Shipyards and marine contractors
  • Ocean cargo and stock throughput programs
  • Pollution and regulatory exposures

Our experience spans coastal operations, vessel fleets, shipping corridors, marine facilities, and nationwide placements.

Two Ways to Work With Us

Most retail and licensed brokers who come to us are in the same spot: they have a client with real marine exposure — a fishing vessel, a tug-and-barge operation, a marina, a seafood distributor, a shipyard — and no clean way to place it. Standard markets decline it, the coverage forms don't fit, and there's no in-house appetite to learn admiralty law for a single account.

We solve that two different ways, and the right one depends on a single question: do you want to keep servicing the account, or hand it off entirely?

  • If you want to keep the account and the relationship, we work behind you in a wholesale capacity. You stay the broker; we place and support the marine piece.
  • If you'd rather hand the client off completely, we take it on directly and pay you an ongoing referral commission for as long as we keep renewing them.

Both keep you paid. The difference is how involved you stay.

Model 1

Wholesale Placement: Keep the Account, Outsource the Marine

This is for retail P&C brokers who own a strong client relationship but don't have marine market access or technical expertise — and don't want to lose the whole account because one exposure sits outside their wheelhouse.

  • The problem we solve.

When a commercial client has a marine risk you can't place, the danger isn't just the lost marine premium. It's that a competing agency with marine capability uses that gap to walk away with the entire account — the property, the GL, the auto, the workers' comp, all of it. A single vessel or dock exposure becomes the wedge that costs you the relationship.

  • How it works.

You bring us the marine portion. We handle everything specialist about it — coverage structuring, market access, submission, negotiation, binding, and ongoing service — while you remain the broker of record on the account and stay the client's primary point of contact. To your client, the marine coverage simply gets handled correctly. We operate behind you, not in front of you.

  • What you keep:

    • The client relationship and the account, start to finish
    • Broker-of-record status and control of the overall program
    • A share of the marine commission (structure/split negotiated based on your level of involvement)
    • Your standing as the person who solved the marine problem, not the one who couldn't
  • What we handle:

    • Access to marine markets you likely can't reach directly — specialty domestic carriers, Lloyd's and London markets, P&I clubs, and program facilities built for vessel, cargo, and facility risk
    • Technical coverage work: hull and machinery, P&I, cargo and stock throughput, pollution and COFR/OPA compliance, marine liability, USL&H, and bumbershoot structuring
    • Contract and charter review where insurance and indemnity language drives the coverage
    • Certificates, endorsements, renewals, and marine claims advocacy
  • Our commitment to your relationship.

We are a marine-only brokerage. We don't quote your client's property, GL, auto, or other lines, and we don't solicit them. The account stays yours; the marine risk is the only thing we touch. That lane discipline is the whole reason a wholesale arrangement works — you get specialist capability without handing a competitor a foothold in your book.

Best fit for: Retail agencies with a book of commercial clients where marine is occasional but real, and where keeping the full account intact matters more than offloading the work.

For freight, seafood distribution, and logistics operations, cargo coverage protects goods in transit by sea, air, or multimodal shipment. Coverage terms are matched to route, commodity type, and contractual responsibility.

Referral Partnership: Hand Off the Client, Get Paid on Every Renewal

This is for licensed brokers who don't want to place or service marine business at all — they'd rather introduce the client, step back, and earn recurring income for the introduction.

  • The problem we solve.

Sometimes a marine account isn't worth the effort to service. Maybe it's a one-off that doesn't fit your operation, maybe it's a favor for a good client, or maybe you simply don't want to carry the E&O exposure of servicing a risk you don't fully understand. Passing it to a generalist who mishandles it reflects back on you. Letting it go unplaced helps no one.

  • How it works.

You refer the client to us. We become the broker of record, place the coverage directly, and own the servicing and the relationship from that point forward. In exchange, we pay you an ongoing referral commission for as long as we retain and renew that client — not a one-time finder's fee. Every renewal cycle we keep them, you get paid again.

  • Why recurring matters.

A flat referral fee pays you once and forgets you. Our structure treats a good introduction as what it actually is — a recurring revenue stream. As long as we do our job and the client renews, the referral commission keeps coming, year after year, with zero ongoing work or exposure on your end. One good marine referral can pay out for as long as that account stays on the books.

  • What you get:

    • Recurring referral commission on the marine account (percentage/term specified when we set up the arrangement), paid on each renewal we retain
    • No placement work, no servicing burden, no marine E&O exposure
    • Confidence the client is handled by a specialist, which protects your standing with them
    • A clean, documented arrangement that fits your license status and state requirements
  • What we handle:

Everything — placement, servicing, certificates, renewals, and claims. Once the introduction is made, the account is ours to manage and yours to earn from.

  • A note on structure and licensing.

Referral and commission-sharing arrangements are governed by state insurance law and depend on the referrer's license status. Because this program is built for licensed brokers, we can structure an ongoing commission-share cleanly and compliantly. We document each arrangement to match your licensing and jurisdiction so the recurring payments are on solid footing — no gray areas.

Best fit for: Licensed brokers who want passive, recurring income from marine risks they'd otherwise turn away — without building any marine capability or taking on servicing.
